Information about the Cibola General Hospital Mil Levy Renewal
Important Information on Your Opportunity to Vote
This fall, you will have the opportunity to vote on the continuation of the Cibola General Hospital Mil Levy.
The health care challenges in Cibola County are well known. So many of our neighbors are uninsured or underinsured, all the while the cost of providing quality care is ever-increasing. This fall we will be reaching out to our community members to ask them to once again vote ‘Yes’ on the Mil Levy. Voting yes ensures that your community hospital will be able to provide care to all residents regardless of ability to pay.
History of the Mil Levy:
The 4.25 mill levy has been in place for more than 16 years. The history of the Mil Levy began in the late 1980’s. After the area collapsed with the closing of the mines, more and more patients were uninsured and had difficulty paying expenses. This in turn, put a financial burden upon the hospital. The Mil Levy was passed to help bring needed funds to the hospital.
Since then, the Mil Levy has been voted on and passed by Cibola County citizens every eight years. The funds are used to pay for CGH operational expenses. The Mil Levy is $4.25 per net $1,000 of assessed property valuation. This means for every $1,000 of assessed property value, the landowner pays $4.25 in property taxes. Approximately $750,000 per year is generated by the mil levy.
For example:
| Retail value of home | Net taxable value | Tax |
| $50,000 | $16,667 | $70.84 |
| $75,000 | $25,000 | $106.25 |
| $100,000 | $33,333 | $141.67 |
This is NOT A TAX INCREASE. This is not a new tax, just a continuation of providing support to health care services for our families.
